Congrats Instructors of the Year 2019!

HEATHER BALICH | Bolingbrook High School

Heather Balich is in her 14th year of teaching business, computer and accounting classes at Bolingbrook High School. Prior to teaching and after earning her CPA license, Ms. Balich served in the accounting industry for 10 years. Since she began her teaching career, Ms. Balich has earned a master’s degree in accountancy. Currently, she is teaching both Personal Finance and Accounting dual credit courses with Joliet Junior College.

Ms. Balich is an excellent teacher who works to get to know her students, their career goals, and how to best motivate them. She employs best practices in her instruction to help students read college-level texts, grasp complex topics and master the skills needed to succeed in her class. Ms. Balich has identified the learning progressions for student mastery of the standards she is instructing. This enables her to be able to use formative assessments to quickly identify where and when students need help. She voluntarily spends extra time with students who are struggling with concepts.

Joliet Junior College recognized Ms. Balich’s strengths and asked her to join their faculty and is currently teaching accounting. Ms. Balich also gives her time to help with the BHS DECA program. She helps recruit and prepare students for their competitive events. She also helps at the state competition with facilitating the awards program. In addition, she has served as a class sponsor for Bolingbrook High School and has taken on the role yearbook advisor.

DR. JEHAD J. MATARIYEH | UNIVERSAL SCHOOL

Dr. Matariyeh has invested considerable time in introducing Dual Credit Political Science to Universal School (Bridgeview, Ill.) 5five years ago. There have been 96 students who have partaken in this rigorous course and earned credit through the partnership with Moraine Valley.

In the past year, Dr. Matariyeh led the effort and has been granted approval for three additional Dual Credit Courses to be taught at Universal School. This great effort now allows an additional 52 students this year the opportunity to earn dual credit. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Jehad Matariyeh for this award (nominated by Mutazz Alabd).
